Adaptive technologies to improve accessibility

Talking clocks and watches

leave a comment »

Description

These devices are equipped with digitised speech output (a human voice is stored electronically), as well as a visual display. When a button is pressed, the time is announced. It is common for an alarm feature to be provided. It is easier on some examples than others to set time and alarm without using the visual display.

Advantages

People who, for any reason, have difficulty reading time from a visual display can benefit. Examples with a periodic time announcement option can serve to help those who have time management problems keep track of time. Cost is not prohibitive.

Disadvantages

The audible time announcement can be disruptive in some settings. On the other hand, it can be difficult to hear announcements in a very noisy setting.
